A latex allergy used to mean settling for a condom that felt like a plastic bag. Polyisoprene is the material that ended that, and plenty of people now choose it with no allergy at all, simply because they prefer how it feels.

Chemically it is natural rubber rebuilt in a lab, minus the proteins that trigger a latex reaction. That means it behaves like latex, soft and stretchy and forgiving about fit, while carrying warmth a little better. In Australia it is mostly the SKYN range, along with Durex Real Feel, and the widths sit around the standard band rather than the extremes.

It does cost more per condom than latex, and the same lubricant rule applies, so water or silicone based only. If your reason for being here is an allergy, this is the material most people land on and stay with.

The right material still has to fit you. A latex-free condom in the wrong width will still slip or pinch, so it's worth knowing your size too.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do polyisoprene condoms protect against STIs?

Yes. Polyisoprene is a full barrier and meets the same Australian standard as latex. Only lambskin, which we do not list, fails that test.

Is polyisoprene the same as latex?

It is the same rubber made synthetically, without the natural proteins people react to. It feels very similar and stretches almost as far.

Can I use oil based lube with polyisoprene?

No. Like latex, polyisoprene is degraded by oils. Water based or silicone based lubricant is the safe choice.
