Nitrile condoms

Nitrile is a synthetic rubber, the same family as medical gloves. It is strong and stretchy, with none of the proteins behind a latex allergy.

Nitrile is the newest of the non latex materials to reach Australian shelves, and if you have ever worn a pair of blue medical gloves you have already met it. As a condom material it is strong, stretchy and completely free of the natural rubber proteins that cause a latex reaction.

What makes it worth knowing about is the width range. Non latex has always been short on options at the edges, so anyone who needs a close fit or an extra large one has usually had to go back to latex. The nitrile range on the shelf here covers close fit through to XL, which is unusual for a latex free material.

One note on our data. The maker does not publish a width for every variant, so some of the figures on this page come from retail listings rather than the manufacturer, and each product page says which. Everything else about it is straightforward.

The right material still has to fit you. A latex-free condom in the wrong width will still slip or pinch, so it's worth knowing your size too.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are nitrile condoms latex free?

Yes. Nitrile is a synthetic rubber with none of the natural rubber proteins that cause a latex allergy, which is why medical gloves moved to it.

Do nitrile condoms protect against STIs?

Yes, to the same Australian standard as latex. It is a full barrier material.

How thick are nitrile condoms?

The maker does not publish a thickness for the Australian range, so we do not list one. Where a figure is missing on this site it is because nobody has measured or published it, not because it is hidden.
